This semester we are working together with Colonias Unidas Community Center in Las Lomas. The purpose of this project is to share research that we’ve developed in response to their request for further information and assistance on three main topics. Those topics are 1) small home-based wax production 2) local community broadcasting 3) sustainable community garden infrastructure. Fourth year design students from Texas A&M University are in the process of raising funds to cover costs and supplies necessary to contribute towards this community.
Colonias Unidas, is a non-profit community-based organization whose mission is to improve the lives of colonia residents in Las Lomas, Rio Grande Valley, Texas near the US/ Mexico border. This rural community has one of the highest levels of poverty in the country. At the present time, Colonias Unidas is focused on providing educational and cultural opportunities to families in an effort to improve their quality of life.
